A hybrid hydro-wind electricity generation system has begun operation on El Hierro, the smallest and most southerly of Spain's Canary Islands, after receiving approval this September for a special subsidy regime. The Central Hidroeolica de El Hierro project required a payment model that is 'unique, specific and singular', according to the decree published in Spain's official gazette following its approval on 23 September by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
