A demonstration project of the EcoGrid EU, a €21 million project, is being tested on the small island of Bornholm in Denmark, which has 2000 consumers. They will be encouraged to switch appliances on or off according to the cost of the energy supply. Sixteen partners from ten countries are members of the project, which is being co-ordinated by SIN-TEF Energy Research in Trondheim, Norway. Up to 50 per cent of the island's supply is based on wind.
