On 5 January a small embankment dam breached in northern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, necessitating the evacuation of several thousands people from the town of Campos de Goytacazes. The failure is a result of prolonged heavy rainfall in south-eastern Brazil, which has caused major damage including floods and landslides.
