With 33 MW of geothermal capability and 26 MW of solar capacity, the world's first solar/geothermal plant has been inaugurated in Nevada, USA. The geothermal plant utilises Enel Green Power's binary process, com- prising large-scale electric submersible pumps for the extraction of the geothermal fluid, combined with 89 000 of CNPV's solar PV modules in a 97 km2 field. The integration of these two technologies sustains output 24 hours/day, and increases deliv- ery during peak hours to give a load-following production profile. Savings are gained because of the shared infrastructure, including transmission interconnection, and a smaller environmental footprint per unit of renewable energy produced and delivered.
