Indonesia's state-owned power utility, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara launched construction recently of the first stage of the Baliem-2 hydro plant on the Baliem river in Papua province. The 50 MW first stage of the run-of-river plant will be equipped with ten 5 MW units and is scheduled to begin commercial operation by 2017.The Baliem-2 project could be uprated to 170 MW in subsequent stages. It forms one of a number of hydroelectric projects with 880 MW of potential total capacity that could be built on the Baliem river, according to a study carried out in 1999. Average annual output will be 361 GWh/year.
