A systems for using waste CO_2 from thermal plants to heat underground water is being investigated by the University of Minnesota, USA. The so called 'CO2 plume geothermal' (CPG) technology sequesters the CO_2, removing it from the atmosphere and exploiting it to produce a geothermal plasma. The research team envisages a geothermal plant which would pump CO_2 down an injection well into a salty aquifer 2 to 5 km below the surface, where pressure and temperatures of 70 to 200° C could transform the gas first into a liquid and eventually into a supercritical state.
