Tajikistan covers an area of 143 100 km~2 and has a population of about 7.8 million (July 2012).Water resources The total average precipitation volume is 51.7 km~3. There are 17 large dams in operation, the largest of which is the 300 m- high Nurek rockfill dam on the Vakhsh river. The major river system is the Amudarya watershed. The Amudarya river is part of Tajikistan's southern border with Afghanistan as it flows westward then northwest toward the Aral Sea.
