Iceland covers an area of about 103 000 km~2 and has a population of 319 575 (January 2012). The total mean precipitation volume is 200 km~3, with 160 km~3 being runoff. Total water consumption for 2008 was 20 to 25 km~3/year. Per capita water consumption is 200 to 250 litres/day. There are 27 large dams in operation: 25 embankment dams and two concrete dams. The total water storage of all dams is 5 km~3. Energy and power sectors The total primary energy consumption in 2011 was approximately 235.6 PJ, derived mainly from geothermal energy (66.1 per cent), fossil fuels (14.6 per cent), and hydro (19 per cent).
