Vattenfall announced in early December that construction work was nearing completion at the Changuinola hydropower project in northwestern Panama. Sweden's State-controlled power company said it had achieved breakthrough on the project's pressurized headrace tunnel, which is 4100 m long, 12 m wide and 10 m high. Vattenfall was responsible for the tunnel design, as well as the geological examinations for the construction. The breakthrough was achieved in late September. "The rock cover is between 100 and 350 m, and it is not possible to make a detailed examination of the geological conditions," said Project Manager Gunnar Frostberg. "It is always a challenge to construct a tunnel in complex geology, as we have here at Changuinola." The rock is composed of limestone, volcanic rock and sedimentary rock.
