Analyses of a number of hydro project options in Alaska's Railbelt area have concluded in a preliminary decision that the Low Watana site, on the Susitna river, should be the main focus of developmental effort in the near future. The analyses conducted by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) last year examined a range of projects including Susitna, Chakachamna, Glacier Fork and others, although the focus was mostly on the first two schemes in the Railbelt area. The aim was to help identify 'the project that had the best chance of being built'. The Railbelt area has six regulated public utilities. While noting that Susitna was expected to be more expensive to develop than Chakachamna, AEA said there was greater construction and tunnelling risk in terms of possible cost overruns for the latter scheme, which also would have greater environmental impact.
