Emgesa of Colombia, which is controlled by Enersis, the investment division for Latin American of the Spanish power utility Endesa, announced in December the finaliza-tion of two major contracts to construct and equip its 400 MW El Quimbo hydro project on the Magdalena river in the southwestern department of Huila, around 350 km south of Bogota. The company said on 16 December that it had finalized a €250 million (US$ 340 million) contract with Italian civil engineering firm Impregilo and Spanish construction company OHL for the main civil works for the El Quimbo plant, including a main dam, which will be 150 m-high and 635 m-long, and a secondary dam, which will be 66 m-high and 410 m-long.
