New dams are to be built to mitigate future floods in Jeddah, according to Eng. Abdullah Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Hussayen, Minister of Water and Electricity and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Saline Water Conversion Corporation. He made the announcement while chairing the 105th meeting of the Board of Directors of the SWCC in Riyadh recently. He pointed out that the water networks in Makkah had not been affected by the rain and flash floods which had swept through the city recently. Jeddah's Al-Marwani and Rabigh dams had stored about 10 × 10~6m~3 of storm water, which had saved the region from imminent danger during heavy rainfall; Assamer dam had also played a major role, Al-Hussayen said, and Beesh dam had stored 200 × 10~6m~3 of water during 2010.
