摘要

The 420 MW Gibe Ⅱ hydro plant in Ethiopia resumed operation in December 2010, after repairs to a tunnel collapse which occurred in January 2010, shortly after its inauguration. Adverse geological conditions had caused a breach in the concrete lining of the 25 km-long tunnel, at a depth of 9 km on 22 January last year, and EEPCo had to close the powerplant. Gibe Ⅱ generates power using water discharged from the 180 MW Gilgel Gibe Ⅰ plant, 26 km upstream. Two 1000 m-long penstocks, which run at a steep gradient, supply Gibe Ⅱ. The complex is about 250 km southwest of Addis Ababa, on the Omo river. Gibe Ⅱ was constructed by Salini Construttori of Italy, at a cost of around US$ 407 million.
