The proposed Burdekin hydro project exploits flows released for irrigation and water supply from the existing Burdekin Falls dam in North Queensland, Australia. The project has a number of interesting design challenges, including as immense potential flood discharge. The Burdekin Falls dam is one of the largest dams in Queensland, and was completed in 1987. It is a concrete gravity structure, tapproximately 35 m high with a crest length of 600 m. The dam has an extremely large catchment area of about 114 780 km~2, and spillway flows over the dam crest have exceeded 15 000m~3/s several times in the past 20 years.
