Japanese dams perform well following the M9 Tohoku earthquake

In the aftermath of the tragic 9 M_w earthquake and resulting tsunami, which devastated large areas of Japan on 11 March, it can be considered a major tribute to Japanese dam engineers that, with the exception of one embankment structure, dams in the region withstood the event well, with only a few cases of superficial damage. The earthquake occurred at 14.46 hrs, Japan Standard Time. The epicentre was 130 km off the east coast of the Oshika Peninsular, in the Tohoku region of the Pacific Ocean. The hypocentre was at a depth of 32 km. According to N. Matsumoto of JCOLD, former Vice-President of ICOLD, by 15 March, a total of 414 dams in the area had been inspected. He told Hy dtvpower & Dams that 10 embankment dams had suffered shallow cracking on the crest, but all were confirmed to be functioning well, with no problems.
