Romania's State-owned hydropower producer Hidroelectrica held a ceremony on 25 February to mark the completion of the rehabilitation of its 510 MW Lotru-Ciunget plant on the Lotru river in the southwestern county of Valcea. The overhaul of the plant, which started in the spring of 2007, cost an estimated €88 million (US$ 121 million). It involved the upgrade of the plant's three 170 MW Pelton tur- bines, three 185 MVA generators, the excitation system, the automation and control system, two butterfly valves, mechanical and electrical balance of plant and six spherical valves. The upgrade work was carried out by Voith Hydro under a €78 million contract awarded in April 2007, with assistance from local engineering companies Hidroserv and Energomontaj. The project was financed with a €60 million loan from the World Bank, with the remaining cost being covered by Hidroelectrica.
