The last hydro project in Brazil with an installed capacity of more than 1 GW using Kaplan turbines was the Porto Primavera scheme. As Brazil's energy plans again appear to call for low head plants of that size, or greater, and as around 10 GW of new large Kaplan capacity (>50 MW/unit) has been subsequently added worldwide since Porto Primavera, it seems timely to examine some of the recent trends in the market. In October 2003, the last of the 14 generators at the Eng. Sergio Motta dam, formerly and also known as the Porto Primavera dam, went into operation. Owned by Companhia Energetica de Sao Paulo (CESP), this plant is on the Parana river, 28 km upstream from the confluence of the Paranapanema and Parana rivers, near the city of Rosana in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Constructed for hydropower production, flood control and navigation, with an installed capacity of 1540 MW (14 x 110 MW), the plant represents the largest Kaplan hydropower project to be completed in Brazil in the last decade, and is equipped with some of the largest Kaplan turbines installed in Brazil (8.6 m runner diameter). The turbines and generators were supplied by Alstom.
