摘要

Hydropower reservoirs, like other natural water bodies, have intense biota, ranging from microorganisms to aquatic vertebrates. The most important effects of dam impoundment are potential changes in the movement of water, which flows much slower than the original river. Slower water movement conditions favour the establishment of phytoplankton and nutrient increases in which methanogenesis replaces the oxidative water, generating anaerobic conditions. Microorganisms (bacteria) decompose organic matter and produce biogenic gases under water as a byproduct. Some of these biogenic gases, such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, are significant in terms of their global warming potential.
