A photovoltaic cell based on organic molecules, now under investigation by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, could exploit the energy of infrared light allowing visible light to pass through, and therefore appear totally transparent. It could be used to coat the surface of conventional glass and lower installation costs, by taking advantage of existing windows. Previous attempts to create transparent solar cells have either resulted in extremely low efficiency (less than 1 per cent of incoming solar radiation is converted to electricity), or blocked too much light to be practical for use in windows. But the MIT researchers have been able to find a specific chemical formulation for the cells that, when combined with partially infrared-reflective coatings, gives both high visible-light transparency and much higher efficiency than earlier versions. So far, an efficiency of 1.7 per cent in the prototype solar cells has been reached, but with further development this could increase to 12 per cent, making it comparable with existing commercial solar panels.
