Meridian Energy, New Zealand's largest electricity generator, announced in mid-June that it had received resource consents from the local authorities to proceed with the development of its proposed Pukaki small hydro project. Meridian is planning to utilize the head between Lake Pukaki and the Pukaki-Ohau canal to build a new powerplant with an installed capacity of up to 35 MW close to the existing canal inlet structure. K. Smales, General Manager of the utility's renewable development division has said that the company had yet to decide when it would go ahead with construction of the project, but the option would be taken up when market conditions were most favourable.
