The Republic of Latvia covers an area of 64 600 km~2 and has a population of 2.2 million (2010).rnThe average annual precipitation is 600 mm. The total mean precipitation volume is 46 km~3, with 15.3 km~3 of mean annual runoff.rnThe Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (MEPRD) is responsible for water resources development, and there are four Committees for Environmental Protection in charge of water at regional level.rnThere are three large dams (according to ICOLD's definition) in operation, and a total of more than 120 small embankments. The total water storage of all dams is about 5 km~3.
