Tajikistan covers an area of 143 100 km~2 and has a population of about 7.5 million (July 2010).rnThe total average precipitation volume is 51.7 km~3. There are 17 large dams in operation, the largest of which is the 300 m-high Nurek rockfill dam on the Vakhsh river.rnThe major river system is the Amudarya watershed. The Amudarya river is part of Tajikistan's southern border with Afghanistan as it flows westward then northwest toward the Aral Sea. Its major tributaries within the country include the Panj river along the southern border of Tajikistan with Afghanistan, the Gunt and Bartang rivers in the eastern part of the country, and the Kofarnihan and Vakhsh rivers in central and western Tajikistan.
