Bhutan's vast hydro potential, only 5 per cent of which has been exploited to date, is already playing a keyrnrole in the country's socio-economic development. There are now ambitious plans to commission 10 000 MW (almost seven times the present installed capacity) by 2020. This paper discusses the plans andrnthe associated challenges for the coming years.
