In view of the gravity of the accident at Sayano Shushenskya in Russia in August 2009, which involved considerable loss of life, it was decided by the organisers of HYDRO 2010 to hold a plenary session, with a special lecture by Or E. Bellendir of the VNIIG Institute, St Petersburg, to discuss the causes of the accident and to obtain input from the industry as a whole on the implications of the accident on future design, operation and maintenance of similar hydro plants.
