Two Indian engineering and construction companies have been awarded contracts for the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project in Bhutan, one of ten hydropower plants with a total - installed capacity of 11 576 MW to be developed jointly by the Governments of India and Bhutan by 2020.rnIn early April, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced that it had won a tender for the dam package contract, which will entail the construction of the diversion tunnel, dam, intake andrnhydromechanical works. It added that the contract, which it valued at Rs 12.45 billion (US$ 249 million), must be completed within 66 months. The contract represents L&T's second hydropower project in Bhutan, following civil works carried out by the company on the 1020 MW Tala plant.rnMeanwhile the Hindustan Construction Company of Mumbai, India, has been awarded a contract worth Rs 6.88 billion ($134.9 million) torncarry out works relating to the headrace tunnel, surge shaft, butterfly valve chamber, pressure shafts, powerhouse, and tailrace tunnel.rnThe project, on the Punatsangchhu river, about 80 km from the capital Thimpu, is being developed by the Punatsangchhu I Hydroelectric Project Authority, which is a bilateral agency set up by the Indian and Bhutanese governments. Wapcos Ltd is the engineering and design consultant on the project.
