New Zealand's Contact Energy is studying plans to develop new hydropower capacity on the Clutha river in Central Otago, to meet expected electricity demand growth over the next 15 years. * The utility, which operates the 432 MW Clyde and 320 MW Roxburgh storage hydropower plants on the Clutha river, said in mid-April that it was reviewing four-options, requiring investment ranging from $300 million to $1.5 billion. "We think the plans that have already been developed for the Clutha are likely to represent the country's best options for new power generation," the com pany said. It added that it hopes to be in a position to announce a preferred development option in 2010 after extensive discussions with local communities.The largest and furthest downstream option would involve the con-rnstruction of a 50 m-high, 520 m-long dam about 2 km upstream from Tuapeka Mouth, with a power station having an estimated capacity of around 350 MW and average annual output of around 1950 GWh. The dam, which would be similar in size to the Roxburgh dam, would create a reservoir of about 3400 ha, extending some 50 km upstream from the dam, and would be almost 50 m above the existing river level at the dam site.
