EVN Makedonija, the local subsidiary of the Austrian multi-utility, and majority owner of the country's power distribution company, ESM, announced in mid-April that it had commissioned the refurbished and upgraded 9.6 MW Matka hydro-power project on the Treska river in FYR Macedonia. Refurbishment of the plant, which was carried out by Hydropol of the Czech Republic, resulted in an increase in capacity to 3.7 MW, while its efficiency was increased to 90 per cent with a discharge of 42 m~3/s. The project involved the construction of a new powerhouse, a new water intake tunnel and two new steel penstocks, as well as new mechanical and hydraulic equipment. Kaplan turbines and other equipment were supplied by GE Norway, while generators were provided by Indar of Spain. The upgrade included the installation of an automated remote system for monitoring and control. The plant, which was built in 1938 and had served as the sole electricity source for Skopje, is the third of seven small hydro schemes to be upgraded under the terms of a reha-bilitate, operate, transfer concession awarded to the Czech company by the former State power monopoly ESM in 2000. The ownership of these seven plants and four others was transferred to the state distribution company at the time of the restructuring of ESM, and subsequently became the property of EVN, when it acquired a controlling stake in the distributor in April 2006.
