On 18 March, CEOs from many of the leading energy companies in Europe handed a declaration to the EU commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, pledging to work towards achieving a carbon neutral power supply by 2050. The European electricity association, Eurelectric, took the initiative for the declaration. The combined power of the 60 signatory companies amounts to approximately 70 per cent of the EU's total electricity production.The declaration expressed the belief that to achieve carbon neutrality while ensuring supply security, a greater variety of power generation options would be required. As well as the renewable energies, clean fossil technologies (such as combined heat and power and nuclear power) would also be considered acceptable.The leaders of the 60 companies had convened in Brussels to discuss key energy issues. They expressed the view that a singlernEuropean market achieved through progressive regional integration would be necessary for the implementation of their low-carbon goal. The CEOs pointed out that companies would need to engage with customers and regulators to ensure they were encouraged to adopt energy-efficient technologies. The CEOs called on the Commissioner and other European policy-makers to provide a framework facilitating these objectives.
