The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) announced in mid-April that the 70 MW Middle Marsyangdi run-of-river hydropower project is generating at full capacity for the first time since its commissioning in Dec-rnember 2008. Both turbines at the peaking powerplant, located near Besishahar in Lamjung district, about 170 km west of Kathmandu, are now operating, generating 70 MW to 75 MW at peak hours every day, as a result of the arrival of snowmelt from the mountains. In off-peak hours, the plant operates only one turbine, which generates between 20 and 35 MW. The plant had only had one unit in service since it began production four months ago, because of a prolonged period of dry weather, the NEA said. The plant is projected to have an average annual output of 398 GWh.rnThe €275 million project, which was part-financed by the German Government through Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau, was scheduled to be commissioned by December 2004 but was delayed as a result of a combination of security concerns for contractors and technical issues.
