Water seeps through most dams or their foundations in a controlled manner, sometimes by design, and as such, as long as the status quo remains, there is not a problem. However, at times dams deteriorate and seepage and leakages increase perhaps to the point of failure.rnIn many cases, warning signs are given before failure. These might include wet patches, increased drain flows, or new drain flows. Engineers working for the owners of reservoirs are then faced with a series of challenges, the primary one being, once the situation has been stabilized, to design remedial works. It may be possible, by lowering the water level or emptying the reservoir, to find the point of entry of water leaking through or under the dam, and it is usually possible to find the outlet. What is more difficult, without other extensive, often intrusive and costly investigations, is to find the actual route of any leakage through or under the dam. It is clearly necessary to try to establish the route so as to be able to limit the extent of any remedial works, whether it be grouting, repud-dling of clay Cores, diaphragm walling, and so on.
