Construction of the Changuinola hydroelectric project in Panama, which includes a 90 m-high roller compacted concrete dam (the country's first dam of this type), is an important part of the country's ambitious plan to harness renewable energy resources, and reduce dependence on imported oil. Rapid economic development is underway, partly associated with the expansion of the Panama Canal, and this is putting pressure on the country's power generation capability.
