To exploit the USA's sources of renewable energy more fully, 'green superhighways' will have to be built, according to a recent publication from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).rnAlthough the USA has vast quantities of clean energy resources, the paper notes that it lacks a modern inter-State transmission grid to deliver this energy to customers in densely populated areas of the country.rnImplementing such a grid system has become more urgent following President Obama's call for the country to double the production of renewable energy in three years, and to secure 25 per cent of its electricity from renewable resources by 2Q25.rnBut the US Department of Energy (DoE) has identified transmission limitations as the greatest obstacle to realizing the economic and environmental benefits from these sources, and the paper highlights the barriers which hinder investment in transmission and identifies potential solutions to overcome these barriers.
