The Estreito powerplant, on the boundary between the States of Tocantins and Maranhao in Brazil, with a scheduled completion date of 2010, is the most recent of several major projects in northern Brazil being built by GDF Suez. This follows the completion of the Sao Salvador hydro plant between the States of Tocantins and Goias, in northern Brazil (see photos below). Sao Salvador has an installed capacity of 241 MW, and was the Group's 15th powerplant, with an investment of € 307 million. About € 37 million was allocated to developing 38 social and environmental programmes in the region (see H&D Issue 2, 2009).rnThe 92 m-high Estreito dam will have an installed hydro capacity of 1086 MW, at a cost of € 1.2 billion. Of this, €130 million will be committed to social and environmental aspects. Both projects are on the Tocantins river.rnIn addition, the Group, along with Energia Sustentavel do Brasil, a consortium of GDF Suez (50.1 per cent), Eletrosul (20 per cent), CHESF (20 per cent) and Camargo Correa (9.9 per cent), has been awarded a 30-year concession to build, own and operate the 3300 MW Jirau plant on the Madeira river in Rondonia, northern Brazil. This project is currently the country's largest infrastructure project. The Brazilian Development Bank is providing 68.5 per cent of the finance, € 2.44 billion.
