The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) announced in early April that it had agreed to provide Reais 101 million (about US$ 45.92 million) to Bahia PCH I, a subsidiary of Neoenergia, for the construction of a 25 MW hydropower plant and associated transmission system on the Femeas river, in the municipality of Sao Desiderio, in the northeastern State of Bahia. The loan from BNDES corresponds to around 75 per cent of the project's total construction cost of BRL 134.8 million (US$ 61.28 million), with the remaining cost to be funded by Neoenergia.rnConstruction work began on the Sitio Grande plant in early 2008, and thernproject is scheduled to be in operation by the end of this year.rnBNDES said that it had helped fund the development of three small hydro plants with a combined capacity of 73 MW in the first quarter of this year, and that over the past six years it had part-financed 83 small hydro schemes with total capacity of 1.7 GW. In February, BNDES also approved a loan of BRL 7.2 billion (US$ 3.26 billion) for the 3.3 GW Jirau project on the Madeira river in western Brazil, (being built by a consortium led by GDF Suez, see p3).rnNeoenergia, controlled by Spanish utility, Iberdrola, which holds a 39 per cent stake, has generation, distributionrnand transmission assets in seven regions of the northeast, centre-west, and southeast of Brazil. Its three distributors supply more than 23 TWh/yar of power to about 8 million customers and it has a combined installed capacity of about 1000 MW including three hydropower plants.
