The Peruvian Government has announced plans to hold a tender in June for the construction 500 MW of new hydropower capacity. Minister of Energy and Mines, Pedro Sanchez Gamarra, announced on 12 April that he hopes the capacity will come on line in 2013, allowing for the country to reduce its dependence on electricity generated by thermal powerplants firing on natural gas from the country's Camisea field.rnLimited pipeline capacity has meant that not all the new plants have been able to operate at capacity, threatening power supplies."I believe we have to make an effective plan to transform the energy mix, to change part of the generation based on fossil fuels to renew-ables, principally hydroelectricity, because Peru has sufficient reserves of hydropower," the Minister explained.
