The 450 MW Kopswerk II pumped-storage scheme in Austria, described as Europe's most modern powerplant of its type, was inaugurated on 15 May at a ceremony in Gaschurn-Rifa, attended by some 1000 guests. The Governor of Vorarlberg, Dr. Herbert Sausgruber, pressed the 'virtual button' indicating the official startup of the scheme. The Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra played within the power cavern during the ceremony.rnIn his opening speech, the Governor commended Vorarlberg lllwerke for taking advantage of the liberalization of the power market and placing its faith in hydropower at such an early stage. The scheme was commended as a major contributor to the independent development of thernenergy industry.rnDr. Hubert Lienhard, CEO of Voith AG (supplier of the pumps), outlined some of the technical challenges which had been faced during construction, and some specific advantages of the scheme for the grid. He noted that the stability of modern grid systems, with a rapidly increasing share of wind energy, relies on pumped storage plants such as Kopswerk II to a significant extent. Wind is intermittent, so during times of strong breezes, pumped-storage plants serve as an important storage medium, he said.
