Two Chinese companies have expressed interest in investing in a new pumped-storage plant on the Danube, according to Dusan Mrakic, State Secretary at Serbia's Ministry of Energy, in a statement issues on 11 June. It is expected that other international investors will express their interest in the Djerdap (Iron Gates) 3 project, with capacity of up to 2000 MW. Mrakic said that the project's tech-rnnical studies, which were first undertaken in the 1970s, are now being updated by Energoprojekt. When they are completed, a new feasibility study will have to be done, he said.rnHe added that the selection of a strategic partner for the project could take place later this year or in 2010.rnThe project is too expensive for Serbia to finance by itself, and financing remains the key obstacle for the realization of the project.
