France's Alstom Hydro, a joint venture of Alstom and Bouygues, has signed a turnkey contract with Sri Lanka's State-owned Ceylon Electricity Board for the partial rehabilitation of the Laxapana hydro power complex. Under the €43 million ($57.3 million) contract, Alstom Hydro will rehabilitate two of the five hydro plants of the Laxapana complex (the Wimalasurendra and New Laxapana plants) with commissioning of the upgraded equipment scheduled for early 2013. "The project will play a positive role in regulating the country's electricity supply, as well as meeting surging power demand in Sri Lanka," Alstom Hydro has said. Wimalasurendra is equipped with two 26 MW Francis turbines, and New Laxapana has two 52 MW Pelton turbines, meaning that in total 156 MW of capacity will be rehabilitated. The project will involve equipping the plants with new governing systems, control systems and regulation and brushless excitors.
