Cote d'Ivoire, in Northwest Africa, has an area of 322 463 km~2 and a population of 19.7 million (June 2006). Three major rivers run through the hot rain-forested lowlands: the Sassandra, Bandama and Comoe. The total water consump- tion in the country is 935 × 10~6 m~3 of which 23 per cent is consumed by domestic users, 65 by agriculture and 12 per cent by industry. Per capita consumption is 50 litres/day. There are five large dams in operation, two concrete dams and three embankment dams. The total water storage capacity of all the country's dams is 36 km3. The proposed Soubre hydro project (270 MW) will involve the construction of a 20 m-high embankment dam with a reservoir capacity of 83 × 10~6 m~3. The 35 m-high Buyo embankment dam with a reservoir capacity of 8.4 × 10~9m~3 is now in operation with 165 MW of capacity.
