摘要

Greece has an area of 131 957 km~2 and a population of about 11.1 million (June 2006). The total mean annual precipitation volume is 93 km~3, with mean runoff of 37 km~3. In 2007 total water consumption was 8.24 km~3. The total water consumption by sector in 2007 was: domestic (12 per cent), agriculture (84 per cent), industry (3 per cent), and other (1 per cent). Per capita water consumption in 2007 was 2.06 litres/day. The Ministry of Planning, Environment and Public Works is now the main organization responsible for the country's water resources. According to the EC Directive No. 2000/60 issued in December 2000 for the management of water resources, the various water authorities provided by national legislation (Law 1739/87) will become active and will be obliged to draw up relevant River Basin District Management Plans. Licences for water use are granted after strict controls. In December 2003, Law No. 3199/2003 was issued for the application of the above mentioned EC Water Directive in Greece.
