The Republic of Malawi has an area of 119 140 km~2 and a population of 12.8 million (June 2006). The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development is in charge of Malawi's water resources, and there are three regional water authorities. Deregulation of the water sector is envisaged soon. Average annual precipitation is 750 to 1600 mm. There are three large dams in operation, built for hydropower generation. The Shire river is a major source for distributing water from Lake Malawi to several users along its course to the Zambezi river. Its flow is dependent on the level in Lake Malawi, which in recent years has been rather unpredictable.
