摘要

The Republic of Turkmenistan has an area of about 488 100 km~2 and a population of about 5.3 million (June 2006). The Ministry of Agriculture and Water is responsible for the country's water resources. Most of the country is an arid desert, and only 2 per cent of the total land area is suitable for agriculture. Only the Amu Darya river contributes significantly to the surface water resources of the region, with an annual flow of about 60 km~3.
