Uganda covers an area of 236 860 km~2 and has a population of 27.7 million (June 2006). Per capita domestic water consumption is 60 to 80 litres/day in urban areas and 20 litres/day in rural areas. The total water storage of Lake Victoria is 3030 km~3. There are two large dams in operation: an embankment dam at Kiira and a concrete dam at Nalubaale. The Directorate of Water Development, within the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, is responsible for the water sector. The Directorate has two main departments: Water Resources Management and Water Supply. Some activities related to water supply are decentralized to local governments. Management of water supply in the city, municipalities and other big towns is under a parastatal organization, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.
