摘要

Azerbaijan has an area of 86 600 km~2 and a population of about 8.5 million (June 2006). The average water replenishment in a year is 32 100 × 10~6 m~3, which falls to 23 to 28 000 × 10~6 m~3 during dry years. On a per capita basis, available water resources in Azerbaijan are estimated at 3800 m~3. The largest rivers, the Kura and Araz (or Araks), account for 80 per cent of total resources. The Samur river provides 7.5 per cent of reliable yield. Fresh groundwater resources are estimated at 4.2 × 10~9 m~3, of which 24 to 30 per cent are derived from filtration of surface waters. Groundwater aquifers account for 12.5 per cent of the overall water resources.
