Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) has an area of 36 000 km~2 and a population of about 22.9 million (June 2007). The average annual precipitation is 2515 mm. The total mean annual precipitation volume is 905 km~3 and the total mean annual runoff is 668 km~3. There are 42 large dams in operation: 12 embankment dams. 29 concrete dams and 31 composite dams. The total water storage capacity of all reservoirs in operation is about 22 km~3. The total water consumption in the country in 2005 was about 17.8 km~3, representing per capita domestic consumption of about 290 litres/day. The percentages of water consumption by sector were as follows: domestic consumption (19.8 per cent), agriculture (70.8 per cent) and industry (9.3 per cent).
