摘要

Eritrea has an area of 121 444 km~2 and a population of about 4.9 million (2007 UN estimate). About 70 per cent of the people are classified as vulnerable to famine as a result of water shortages and a lowering of the water table. The Department of Water Resources is under the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment. Its mandate includes the study, development and management of water resources. Operational responsibilities are under Ministry of Agriculture (irrigation) and there are local Government utilities for water supply to urban and rural areas. There are three large dams in operation: two composite dams and one concrete dam. The total water storage of all dams is 0.12 km~3. About 55 per cent of the population has access to a water supply. Water resources development is currently limited to meeting agricultural and domestic needs.
