Georgia covers an area of 69 700 km~2 and has a population of about 4.5 million (June 2007). The average annual precipitation is 1390 mm, but ranges from 400 to 4500 mm. The total mean precipitation volume is about 96.9 km~3. Per capita domestic water consumption is 600 litres/day in urban areas and 150 litres/day in rural areas. Georgia has nine large dams in operation. The 195 m-high Khudoni arch dam is under construction on the Enguri river, for hydro generation. The total water storage of all dams in the country is 2.61 × 10~6 m~3, (of which 1.93 × 10~6 m~3 is live). The Ministry of Fuel and Energy is responsible for the production of electricity from water resources, while the Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for irrigation, and the municipal governments are responsible for water supply.
