摘要

Guatemala has an area of about 109 000 km~2 and a population of about 13 million (June 2006). Water resources There are four large dams in operation, all for hydropower: Chixoy (275 MW), Aguacapa (90 MW), Jurun Marinala (60 MW) and Los Esclavos (14 MW). Energy and power sectors Electricity is produced by hydro (about 40 per cent), thermal plants (57 per cent), and a 20 MW geothermal plant (about 3 per cent). There are plans to add more geothermal capacity (700 MW). Total electricity production is about 6.6 TWh and electricity consumption about 5.8 TWh (both figures are for the year 2002). Electricity consumption is increasing by about 10 per cent/year. The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) oversees the energy sector. According to the General Electricity Law of 1996, Comision Nacional de Energia Electrica (CNEE) was created to regulate and supervise the power sector.
