摘要

The People's Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) has an area of 120 540 km~2 and a population of about 23.3 million (June 2007). The energy sector comes under various ministries, including the Ministry of Power Industry, the Ministry of Atomic Energy and the Ministry of Coal Industry. North Korea is dependent on two main sources of energy: coal and hydropower, as well as a small amount of imported oil. In 2000, coal represented about 86 per cent of primary energy consumption. Electricity generating capacity is about 9500 MW. There is about 4780 MW of hydro capacity in operation, generating about 13 000 GWh/year. Hydropower produces about 67 per cent of national power production, and thermal plants 33 per cent. The thermal plants are under-utilized as a result of lack of fuels and difficulties with the transportation of coal. The country has power shortages, with frequent blackouts and power rationing.
