摘要

Rwanda has an area of 26 338 km~2 and a population of about 8.65 million (October 2006). Average precipitation varies between 800 mm/year in the eastern plains to 2000 mm/year in the northwest. Per capita domestic water consumption is 43 litres/day in urban areas and 14 litres/day in rural areas with small communities. While there are no large dams in operation, there is one small dam with a storage capacity of 1 × 10~6m~3 at the Shyogwe water production station in Gitarama province. Improvements to the water intake of this dam are planned as part of the rehabilitation of the AEPE water project. This project also foresees the construction of a new small dam to channel the water towards the intake structures better. Electrogaz, the public utility responsible for the water and energy sectors, was managed by Lahmeyer International of Germany from 2002 to 2005, but is now managed by the Government.
